Morning Sports Report – 3/11/14

Ohio basketball toppled Ball State last night in the first round of the MAC tournament, 76-64. Ohio came storming out of the gates, racing out to a 25-6 lead behind a hot start from deep with Nick Kellogg and Travis Wilkins. Kellogg became the MAC’s all-time leading three-point shooter in the contest. The Bobcats never looked back, keeping the lead at double digits the rest of the night as Ohio shot 52 percent from the field in the win. Kellogg led the Bobcats with 17 points and Bean Willis poured in 15 points with five assists. Ohio will now advance to Cleveland to take on Miami on Wednesday night. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game coverage beginning at 5:30 with the Bobcat Insider and the tip off at 6:30.

Ohio women’s basketball had their season come to an end last night in Toledo in the MAC tournament, 61-44. The Lady Cats struggled to get going all night, shooting 7-of-39 from behind the arc and 27 percent from the field. Ohio was led by Lexie Baldwin, who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

In other MAC men’s tournament action, Miami bested Kent State, 71-64. Eastern Michigan toppled Central Michigan, 72-60 and NIU ousted Bowling Green, 54-51 in overtime.

The Columbus Blue Jackets had their game with the Dallas Stars last night cancelled and postponed. The Jackets jumped out to the early advantage, but just six minutes into the game Rich Peverley of the Stars collapsed on the bench. Peverley was conscious and taken to a hospital. The 31-year old missed last Tuesday’s game with Columbus for an irregular heartbeat. The Jackets will now host the Detroit Red Wings tonight. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:45 and drop of the puck at 7.

Elsewhere in the NHL last night, the LA Kings edged Calgary, 3-2. Phoenix ousted Tampa Bay, 4-3 in a shootout. Nashville clipped Ottawa, 4-3 in overtime. Pittsburgh topped Washington, 3-2 and Colorado snuck past Winnipeg in overtime, 3-2.

In NBA play, Atlanta outlasted Utah, 112-110. Milwaukee bested Orlando, 105-98. New York toppled Philadelphia, 123-110. Miami ousted Washington, 99-90. Brooklyn defeated Toronto, 101-97 and Charlotte handled Denver, 105-98.
