Morning Sports Report – 5/30/2014

The Trimble Tomcats had their season come to an end last night after losing to Newark Catholic 4-1 in a DIV regional semi-final in Lancaster. Trimble jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Andrew Losey in the top of the 5th inning. Newark Catholic however scored once in the bottom half – and three more in the 6th – to slam the door shut on the Tomcats season. It was a heartbreaking loss for Trimble, which fell to 0-and-5 in DIV regional tournament games since 2001 – with four of those losses coming to the Green Wave.

Josh Collmenter faced the minimum in a three-hitter, Aaron Hill homered and had two RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-0 Thursday night. Collmenter breezed through his first career complete game, joining Randy Johnson as the only Arizona pitcher to face the minimum 27 batters in a nine-inning game.  Hill, who went 1 for 10 in a three-game series against San Diego, had three hits, including a solo homer in the sixth inning off Tony Cingrani. The Reds had one runner reach second base, Brayan Pena in the third inning, and he was thrown out at third after tagging up on a fly ball to center. Cincinnati will look to even the series with Arizona tonight and will send Mike Leake to the mound. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 9:10 and the first pitch at 9:40.

Tim Duncan had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Manu Ginobili scored 19 points and the San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 117-89 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder last night to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference finals. Danny Green had 14 points; Boris Diaw added 13 and Tony Parker scored 12 for the Spurs, who are a win away from returning to the NBA Finals after losing in seven games to Miami last year.

An individual with knowledge of negotiations to sell the Los Angeles Clippers says Shelly Sterling has reached an agreement to sell the team to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer for $2 billion. The individual, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly, told The Associated Press on Thursday that Ballmer and the Sterling Family Trust now have a binding agreement.  Shelly Sterling negotiated the sale after her husband, Donald Sterling, made racist remarks that were made public. Donald Sterling must also approve the final agreement as a 50 percent owner. His attorneys say that won’t happen

Rory McIlroy made two eagles on the back nine Thursday at The Memorial Golf Tournament in Dublin – and opened with a 9-under par to lead the field. Mcllroy owns a three shot lead over Masters champion Bubba Watson, Paul Casey and Chris Kirk after the first round at Muirfield Village.
