The last time Homer Bailey faced the Giants, he threw the second no-hitter of his career, silencing San Francisco’s bats on July 2 of last season. Bailey, who has turned in six quality starts in his last eight outings, looks to continue that type of dominance against San Francisco as the Reds open a three-game set with the Giants at Great American Ball Park tonight. Cincinnati has won three in a row and is looking to continue their recent success against San Francisco, having won six of seven against the Giants last season, and eight of 10 games against them dating back to 2012. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pregame set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10.
After taking 3-out-of-4 from the Diamondbacks, the Reds improved to 26-and-29 overall this season and trail the first place Brewers by 7 games. St. Louis is second in the NL central and is 4 games behind Milwaukee. Last year’s division champion, the Pittsburg Pirates, are just a ½ game behind Cincinnati and 71/2 out of first. The Cleveland Indians meanwhile trail the Detroit Tigers by 6 games in the AL central division.
Mat Latos pitched well in his second minor league rehab start at Triple-A Louisville, allowing just three hits and a pair of walks over 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Latos fanned three on the evening, throwing 46 of his 81 offerings for strikes. It’s likely that he’ll get stretched out in a third and final rehab start before rejoining the Reds rotation.
Joey Votto could take live batting practice in the next few days. Votto has already been fielding some grounders. While he didn’t return on Saturday when first eligible tom come off the disabled list, it’s looking like the Reds’ first baseman isn’t too far away. It’s not clear whether he’ll go out on a short rehab assignment before being activated.
The 2014 season kicks off Thursday when the Southern Ohio Copperheads, Presented by OhioHealth O’Bleness Hospital, play host to the Hamilton Joes. If you can’t make it out to the ballpark, the game will be aired live on Power 105 with pregame scheduled for 7:15.
On your radio dial tonight at 6:06, it’s the Sports Fan presented by J&K Contracting on 970WATH and 97.1FM.
