The Cincinnati Reds lost a series and got another concern about their pitching staff. Madison Bumgarner got his career-high sixth straight win, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Reds 6-1 on Thursday afternoon, taking a series in Cincinnati for the first time in five years. The Reds won the series opener, pushing their winning streak to a season-high four straight. Then they dropped the last two, scoring a total of three runs. Mike Leake lasted just 5 innings yesterday and allowed 8 hits and 5 earned runs. He wasn’t fully healthy, however, and Manager Bryan Price revealed after the game that Leake has been limited by a stiff neck in his last three starts, interfering with his delivery.
The Reds continue their 10-game home stand tonight against the Phillies, with Johnny Cueto going against Cole Hamels. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10.
During his third rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday, Reds pitcher Mat Latos threw five innings and allowed two earned runs and struck out three while throwing 67 pitches at Lehigh Valley. Latos, however, exited prematurely with an apparent leg injury. It was expected that he would throw 90 to 100 pitches in the game as a requisite before being activated from the disabled list.
The Southern Ohio Copperheads opened the season with a tough loss to the Hamilton Joes last night in front of 1,282 fans at Bob Wren Stadium. The Snakes offense scored in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and led 1-0 until Hamilton scored four times in the top of the 8th to claim a 4-1 victory. Starter Walter Borkovich was terrific on the mound for Southern Ohio tossing six shutout innings and allowing just four hits. The Copperheads and Joes will meet again tonight in Hamilton with a 7:05 scheduled start time.
Athens American Legion Post 21 lost its season opener last night falling to Waverly 13-3 in 8 innings. The Gunners will be back in action Sunday as they host Meigs for a doubleheader at Rannow Field on The Plains. The first game is scheduled to start at 1PM.
The 2014 All TVC baseball teams were announced on Thursday. Tyler Vickers, Blake Lindner, Brody McGrath, Zac Smith and Shea Grisby made the All TVC-Ohio team from Alexander. Lindner was also named offensive player of the year and Vickers defensive player of the year. Head coach Vaughn Grisby was named coach of the year after leading the Spartans to a TVC-Ohio championship this season. Ryan Luehrman, Adam Luehrman and Heath Wiseman made the team from Athens along with Billy Seal and Brandon Rife from Nelsonville-York. Trimble placed 4 players on the All TVC-Hocking team, Austin Downs, Caullin Lunsford, Dante Bramer and Andrew Losey. Lunsford was also named offensive player of the year and head coach Phil Faires coach of the year. Phil Hoffman, Devon Maxey and Chris Baker of Federal Hockinig were named All league as well.
