In Spring Training action yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds edged the Cleveland Indians, 5-4. The Reds led 3-0 for almost the entire game behind Todd Frazier’s two-run triple and a pair of base knocks from Joey Votto. However, the Indians responded with a Nick Swisher homer and Lonnie Chisenhall triple in the ninth to take a one-run lead. But in the bottom half, the Reds responded behind minor leaguer Steve Selsky’s RBI double to win it. The Reds will now battle Kansas City on Wednesday night at 9. Ohio basketball’s season isn’t over just yet. The Bobcats accepted a bid to play in the CIT or the CollegeInsider tournament. The Bobcats will open the postseason tournament with a home game against in-state rival Cleveland State on Wednesday. Ohio was one of the last teams left out of the NIT. The Bobcats and Vikings do battle at the Convo in the CIT on Wednesday on Power 105. Pre game coverage will start at 6 with the Bobcat Insider and the tip at 7. [more...]

Ohio basketball had their MAC tournament come to an end last night as they fell to Akron in Cleveland, 83-77. The Bobcats led nearly the entire first half and held a five-point advantage going into the intermission. In the second half, both teams came out scorching hot with Ohio’s Nick Kellogg and Bean Willis trading treys with Quincy Diggs and Reggie McAdams of Akron. The Bobcats led by eight with about eight minutes left, but Akron came storming back and dominated the final minutes to pull away. Akron shot 34 free throws to Ohio’s 11, scored 50 points in the second half and shot 62 percent in the second period to get the win. Ohio will now await a possible postseason berth. [more...]

Ohio men’s basketball advanced to the third round of the MAC tournament yesterday with a 63-55 win over the Miami Redhawks. Ohio and Miami were both ice cold in the first half, with Ohio leading by four at the break. In the second half, the two squads went back and forth until Miami led by four with 10 minutes left. However, a pair of Stevie Taylor treys gave the Bobcats the lead right back. Ohio didn’t trail the final five minutes of the game and picked up the tournament win. The Columbus Blue Jackets blew past the Detroit Red Wings last night, 4-1. The Red Wings took the early lead, but the Jackets answered with a Nick Foligno goal late in the first to tie it. After a scoreless second period, Columbus caught fire, scoring twice in the tenth minute on goals from Boone Jenner and Brandon Dubinsky. Then a Derek MacKenzie goal five minutes later sealed the win. The Blue Jackets will now host the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night. Ohio basketball toppled Ball State last night in the first round of the MAC tournament, 76-64. Ohio came storming out of the gates, racing out to a 25-6 lead behind a hot start from deep with Nick Kellogg and Travis Wilkins. Kellogg became the MAC’s all-time leading three-point shooter in the contest. The Bobcats never looked back, keeping the lead at double digits the rest of the night as Ohio shot 52 percent from the field in the win. Kellogg led the Bobcats with 17 points and Bean Willis poured in 15 points with five assists. Ohio will now advance to Cleveland to take on Miami on Wednesday night. There is potential for some shakeup in the Tri-Valley Conference coming in the near future. Logan, Warren, Gallia Academy and Jackson from the SEAOL have all applied to join the TVC. The conference recently added River Valley and with the SEOAL struggling to stay together, the Tri-Valley Conference could grow even more. A meeting to hear pitches and applications is set for next Wednesday. [more...]

Ohio women’s basketball fell to Kent State last night, 69-64. The Golden Flashes led by four at the intermission and pushed the lead out to as many as 12 in the second half. But the Bobcats would not roll over, going on a 16-5 run to pull within one with five minutes remaining. Kent State led again by seven, but threes from Mariah Byard and Quiera Lampkins cut the lead to one. However, Ohio’s run fell short and the Bobcats fell at home. The Lady Cats were led by Lampkins with 16 points. Ohio will battle Miami on Saturday at 2:30. [more...]

The Ohio Bobcats toppled Bowling Green on the road last night, 72-61. The Bobcats controlled most of the game and jumped out to a 12-point advantage at the break behind a 17-6 run to finish the first half. The Falcons cut the Ohio lead to seven early in the second half, but the Cats responded with a 13-3 run and never looked back. Ohio played without star forward Maurice Ndour and Nick Kellogg led the way with 25 points. The Bobcats will head to Miami to wrap up the regular season on Saturday. The Columbus Blue Jackets edged the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, 2-1. The Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second behind a pair of goals from Dalton Prout and Artem Anisimov. Toronto cut the lead to one with four minutes left, but Sergei Bobrovsky was stellar and held off a late comeback. Columbus will now host Dallas tonight at 7. [more...]
