The Athens Bulldogs remained undefeated this season after knocking off Marietta 48-38 last night at McAfee Gymnasium on The Plains. Ryan Luehrman scored a team high 11 points and Adam Luehrman added 10 for the Bulldogs, who improved to a perfect 6-0 heading into the New Year. The Alexander Spartans led Logan at halftime but fell to the Chieftains 51-43 at Jim Myers Gymnasium in Logan. Trimble knocked off rival Nelsonville-York 48-40 in Buchtel to remain undefeated and improve to 5-0 this year. Justice Jenkins scored a team high 21 points for the Tomcats. Kolten Adams scored 23 for the Buckeyes, who welcome Eastern to Ben Wagner Gymnasium on Saturday. [more...]

Griffin Lutz scored a game high 19 points and Athens remained perfect on the season after beating Circleville 60-35 last night. Joe Burrow scored 16 for the Bulldogs, who improved to 5-0. Athens carried just a five point lead into the locker room at half, but outscored the Tigers 19-13 in the 3rd to take a 41-30 advantage into the final frame. The Bulldogs then held Circleville to just five fourth quarter points to seal the victory. Athens will be back in action tonight when it welcomes Marietta to McAfee Gymnasium on The Plains. The Pittsburgh Steelers are back on top of the AFC North. Antonio Brown returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown and added a clinching 63-yard scoring grab with 2:50 to go in the Steelers’ 27-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night. Pittsburgh earned its first division title since 2010 by sweeping the season series from the Bengals. The Steelers are the No. 3 seed in the AFC and will host Baltimore in the wild-card round Saturday night. The Bengals are the No. 5 seed and will play at AFC South champion Indianapolis on Sunday. Brown had 212 all-purpose yards, including the late dazzling catch and run to the end zone. [more...]

Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields each scored 22 points as Nebraska beat the Ohio Bobcats 72-58 on Thursday to claim fifth place in the Diamond Head Classic. Petteway shot 6 of 14 from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds. Shields made 7 of 14 field goals and hit all seven of his free throw attempts. The Cornhuskers did not trail in the game and also got 13 rebounds and eight points from David Rivers. It was their second consecutive victory and third in their last four games. Javarez Willis had team-high 15 points and eight rebounds and Maurice Ndour chipped in with 12 for the Bobcats, who fell to (4-6) this season. Ohio will take a few days off to travel back from Hawaii, and then will be back in action next Saturday when it welcomes UNC-Wilmington to the Convocation Center for a 7PM tipoff. [more...]

Joe Burrow scored 18 points and grabbed a game high 11 rebounds to help lead Athens to a 77-36 win over Jackson last night. Sophomore Griffin Lutz also scored 18, including 11 in the 2nd quarter for the Bulldogs, who remained undefeated and improved to 4-0 this season. Adam Luehrman chipped in with 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds to go along with 3 blocks. Justice Jenkins scored a team high 17 points to help Trimble defeat Waterford 67-42. Grant Clarke scored 11 and grabbed 12 boards for the Tomcats, who improved to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the TVC-Hocking. The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes fell to Southern 44-42 on a last second shot by the Tornadoes Tristen Wolfe as time expired. [more...]

Dre Kirkpatrick returned Peyton Manning’s third interception for a touchdown in the closing minutes on Monday night, completing a fourth-quarter rally that gave the Cincinnati Bengals a 37-28 victory and a spot in the playoffs. Kirkpatrick’s 30-yard return with 2:41 left capped a game of big plays – long runs, big kick returns and two interceptions run back for scores. Kirkpatrick picked off Manning again with 67 seconds left to clinch it. Rookie tailback Jeremy Hill carried the ball 22 times for 147 yards and a touchdown for the Bengals, who clinched a playoff berth for a franchise record fourth consecutive season. Griffin Lutz and Ryan Luehrman each chipped in with 11 for the Bulldogs, who improved to 3-0 overall and 3-0 in the TVC-Ohio. The Trimble Tomcats also remained perfect on the year after winning a couple of games over the weekend. Trimble defeated Miller 79-52 Friday night and Crooksville 68-53 on Saturday. Alexander picked up its fourth win after beating Meigs 46-42 Friday, Federal Hocking defeated Belpre 69-63, and Nelsonville-York fell to 3-3 after losing to Belpre on Saturday night in Buchtel. The Ohio men’s basketball team looks to pick up its second-straight win as it hits the road for just the second time this season. The Bobcats will visit (7-2) Evansville tonight in a 9:05 p.m. clash at the Ford Center. Ohio took down Alcorn State, 66-55, last Saturday at the Convocation Center. The victory was pioneered behind sophomore forward Antonio Campbell, who posted his second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. The Bobcats and the Purple Aces will meet for just the sixth time, with Ohio holding a 3-2 edge in the all-time series, including last year’s 81-59 triumph. The high school basketball season goes into full swing tonight when four county teams hit the hardwood. The Athens Bulldogs open their season just eight days removed from playing in the state championship game last Thursday. The Bulldogs, led by standout senior Joe Burrow, will welcome the Meigs Marauders to McAfee Gymnasium on The plains. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM. The Nelsonville-York Buckeyes play host to Vinton County in a key early season TVC-Ohio showdown that can be heard live on power 105 WXTQ. The Columbus Blue Jackets return to the rink tonight when they welcome the Washington Capitals to Nationwide Arena. The Jackets have yet to lose in December and have climbed out of the basement in the Metropolitan Division after a rocky start to the season. Playing without stars Artem Anisimov, Ryan Murray and Mark Letestu because of injury, Columbus has managed to stay afloat – and after Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Philadelphia – improved to 10-15-2 this year.
