Mike Leake pitched into the eighth inning and singled home a run — a rare commodity for the Reds these days — leading Cincinnati to a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. The Reds won for only the second time in 11 games since the All-Star break. The offense has been the biggest problem, scoring only 20 runs — by far the fewest in the majors over that span. Leake (8-9) had a single off the glove of diving third baseman Martin Prado that drove in a run in the second off Trevor Cahill, who has yet to win as a starter this season. Todd Frazier and Brayan Pena had RBI singles off Cahill, who fell to 0-6 in seven starts this season. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his 23rd save. He extended his streak of at least one strikeout in 45 consecutive appearances, a major league record for a reliever. [more...]

Nick Ahmed’s RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning sent the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night and kept their franchise perfect when games go really long. Arizona is 13-0 all-time in games of at least 15 innings. Ahmed’s single off J.J. Hoover gave the Reds their ninth loss in 10 games since the All-Star break, a slump that has dropped them below .500 for the first time since June 21. The offense has been the problem, scoring only 17 runs in those 10 games, by far the fewest in the majors. Oliver Perez  gave up a hit and a walk in two innings. Addison Reed got his 25th save in 30 chances. Cincinnati’s Aroldis Chapman fanned the side in the ninth, extending his major league record for a reliever to 44 consecutive games with at least one strikeout. [more...]

The Southern Ohio Copperheads picked up their 22nd win of the season Friday after they defeated the Lake Erie Monarchs 7-4 to clinch second place in the league. The Snakes fell to the Monarchs 4-3 in extra innings Saturday and Brett Impemba hit a grand slam last night to give Southern Ohio a victory in the season finale. The Copperheads went 13-2 down the stretch and will enter the tournament as one of the league’s hottest teams. The Snakes will open a three-game series in the GLSCL semifinals on Wednesday. They will play Game 1 on the road, with a home game Thursday and Friday, if necessary. [more...]

A number of Washington Nationals are enjoying success at the plate, while the Cincinnati Reds are searching for answers with the club on the brink of its longest losing streak in five years. The Nationals look to stay hot tonight when they visit Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, where the Reds’ Alfredo Simon looks for his major league-leading 13th victory. Cincinnati is winless since the all-star break and hasn’t lost seven in a row since an eight-game slide in August of 2009. Tonight’s game versus the Nationals can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

Jonathan Lucroy homered leading off the bottom of the ninth to give the Milwaukee Brewers a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. It was Lucroy’s second homer of the game and 11th of the season. It was his second career walkoff homer and both were against the Reds. His first was last season off closer Aroldis Chapman and this one was off Sam LeCure. Cincinnati, which is 0-5 since the All-Star break, brought in LeCure to pitch the ninth. His outing lasted just three pitches as Lucroy hit a 1-1 offering for a line drive homer inside the left field foul pole. [more...]

Milwaukee scored three runs on two misjudged balls in the outfield by Chris Heisey, and Wily Peralta pitched seven strong innings in the Brewers’ 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night. Ryan Braun hit a two-run double in the third on which Heisey took a couple of steps in before retreating as the high liner went over his head. The four-year veteran with 134 career starts in left field apparently lost Carlos Gomez’s high fly ball to the warning track in the fourth inning that turned into an RBI ground-rule double that made it 4-0. Peralta allowed three hits, including Billy Hamilton’s solo homer. Francisco Rodriguez threw a 1-2-3 ninth for his 29th save. Cincinnati’s Mat Latos gave up four earned runs and eight hits in seven innings. [more...]

Jacoby Ellsbury got four hits and scored the winning run in the ninth on Brian McCann’s pop-fly single that dropped among three Cincinnati Reds in shallow right field, giving the New York Yankees a 3-2 victory Sunday. Ellsbury and Derek Jeter each had an RBI single for the Yankees, who finished a three-game sweep in their first series after the All-Star break. Hiroki Kuroda outpitched Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto and left with a 2-1 lead before Todd Frazier’s tying homer in the eighth. Ellsbury reached safely all five times up, including a leadoff single in the ninth off Aroldis Chapman. Before that, left-handed hitters had been 1 for 18 with 12 strikeouts against the hard-throwing Cuban this season. The Reds head to Milwaukee tonight where they will begin a three game set with the first place Brewers. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 7:40 and the first pitch at 8:10. [more...]

The Cincinnati Reds second half will begin with injuries, a big storyline of their first half, still looming large. But even though not at full strength, a strong stretch over the last month and seven wins in the team’s final nine games before the break has Cincinnati just 1 1/2 games back in the National League Central. The Reds will travel to the Bronx tonight to face Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees after a four-day hiatus. Cincinnati will be without two major parts of their lineup. Brandon Phillips will miss more than a month with a torn ligament in his left thumb, and Joey Votto is on the disabled list for the second time this season with a nagging right thigh injury. Tonight’s game versus the Yankees can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game scheduled for 6:35 and the first pitch at 7:05. [more...]

The Southern Ohio Copperheads won 9-4 over the Lake Erie Monarchs last night. Caleb Swartz pitched five innings and allowed 3 earned runs to pick up his second win of the year. Ohio University’s Tyler Finkler hit two triples, a double, drove in three runs and scored twice. The victory was the Copperheads fifth win in a row and pushed their record to 15-14 overall on the season. Matt Mikolajczak tossed six strong innings, and the Snakes posted a 4-2 win at Lake Erie on Monday night. Mikolajczak, who pitches for Ohio University in the spring, continued his strong season.
