Devin Mesoraco hit a grand slam with two outs in Cincinnati’s five-run ninth inning, leading the Reds to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Monday night. Mesoraco went deep for the fourth straight game, driving a 1-0 pitch from Hector Rondon into the basket in left-center for his 13th homer. It was Mesoraco’s second grand slam of the season and No. 3 of his career. Billy Hamilton had a tiebreaking RBI single earlier in the inning as Cincinnati won for the sixth time in seven games to move above .500 for the first time this season. Starter Alfredo Simon went 7 innings and allowed just one earned run while striking out 5. Todd Frazier went 3-for-5 at the plate with 1 RBI and stole his 8th base of the year. Cincinnati will look for its fourth consecutive win tonight and will send Homer Bailey to the mound. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game at 7:35 and the first pitch at 8:05. [more...]

Johnny Cueto pitched eight effective innings and the Cincinnati Reds beat Toronto 4-3 Sunday to win their third consecutive series. Cincinnati lost the opener 14-9 Friday at Great American Ballpark, but recovered to win 11-1 Saturday before claiming yesterday’s victory. Cueto gave up three runs — one earned — and struck out eight to pick up his seventh win of the season. Todd Frazier broke a 2-all tie in the fifth inning with a two-run homer off Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey. It was Frazier’s team leading 17th homerun of the season. The Reds will be back in action tonight as they travel to Wrigley Field to begin a three-game set with the Cubs. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pregame set for 7:35 and the first pitch at 8:05. [more...]

Alfredo Simon became the NL’s first 10-game winner and Billy Hamilton had three hits and three RBIs in the Cincinnati Reds’ 11-4 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night. Simon (10-3) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks in 6 1-3 innings and Cincinnati won for the sixth time in seven games. Brandon Phillips, Skip Schumaker and Zack Cozart each had two of the Reds’ 14 hits in the game, which was delayed 1 hour, 15 minutes by rain in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schumaker also had three RBIs. The Reds will look for the 3-game sweep this afternoon and will send Homer Bailey to the mound. Todd Frazier led off the ninth inning with a tiebreaking homer, lifting Cincinnati to a 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates last night after the Reds’ bullpen blew a three-run lead. Frazier’s team-leading 16th home run to center field came off closer Jason Grilli and gave the Reds their fifth win in six games. Billy Hamilton had three hits and two stolen bases for the Reds, while Joey Votto had two hits and three RBIs. Frazier, Brandon Phillips and Ryan Ludwick added two hits apiece. Hamilton is 8 for 13 in his last three games. Cincinnati is 5-2 and averaging 5.3 runs per game since Votto was activated from the disabled list after missing three weeks with a quadriceps strain. The Reds and Pirates will square off again tonight for game two of the series at PNC Park. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:35 and the first pitch at 7:05. The Cincinnati Reds return to the baseball diamond tonight and will travel to Pittsburg after having Monday off. Starter Johnny Cueto will make his third start against the Pirates in the Steel City when the two National League Central foes kick off a three-game series. In two starts against Pittsburg this year the Reds right-hander has dominated. In back-to-back April starts, Cueto went nine innings in both games against the Bucs, shutting them out to go with 12 strikeouts in the first start – and allowing just one run on three hits in the sequel. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game at 6:35 and the first pitch at 7:05. [more...]

The San Antonio Spurs won their fifth NBA championship, beating the Miami Heat 104-87 last night to win the series in five games. Kawhi Leonard had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Spurs, who won their 5th title since 1999. They nearly had another last year, but couldn’t hold off the Heat and lost in seven games. The rematch was no match at all. San Antonio rebounded from an early 16-point deficit by outscoring the Heat 37-13 from the start of the second quarter to midway in the third. LeBron James had 31 points and 10 rebounds as Miami’s two-year title reign ended. [more...]

Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer off Zack Greinke, who lost his perfect record at Great American Ball Park, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 yesterday for a split of their four-game series. The Reds won the last two games to finish a 5-5 homestand that left them stuck closer to the bottom of the NL Central than the top. Alfredo Simon gave up seven singles in eight innings, joining the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright as the NL’s nine-game winners. Joey Votto finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Skip Shumaker collected two hits as well and scored twice for Cincinnati. [more...]

Johnny Cueto matched his career high with 12 strikeouts in six innings, and Joey Votto and Jay Bruce — the missing core of Cincinnati’s batting order much of the season — each drove in runs Wednesday night, leading the Reds to a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cueto (6-5) followed his shortest start of the season with one of his most dominating. He gave up three singles and didn’t walk a batter, leaving after his 112th pitch. Cueto lasted only five innings during an 8-0 loss to Philadelphia on Friday. Jonathan Broxton escaped a bases-loaded, one-out threat in the seventh by getting Hanley Ramirez to ground into a double play. Votto doubled home a pair of runs off Hyun-Jin Ryu (7-3), who had won his last four starts. [more...]

Scott Van Slyke drove in a career-high four runs with two homers off struggling left-hander Tony Cingrani, and the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled away to a 6-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Van Slyke hit a solo homer and a three-run shot off Cingrani, who could lose his spot in the rotation when Mat Latos returns from the disabled list later this week. Cingrani gave up a career-high six runs, allowed seven hits — matching his career high — and three walks in just 4 2-3 innings. Ryan Ludwick went 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer and 1 RBI; Brandon Philips also collected two hits. With the loss Cincinnati fell to 3-4 on their current 10-game homestand, leaving them fourth in the NL Central. [more...]
