The good news for the Columbus Blue Jackets: there are five months left in the NHL season, plenty of time to crawl out of 15th place in the Eastern Conference and make it back to the Stanley Cup playoffs. The bad news is there are five months left in the season, and it could be a long winter if they don’t get healthy and awaken from their uninspired funk quickly. The Blue Jackets keep thinking they hit rock bottom, only to discover a new low, like Saturday’s 7-4 loss to Tampa Bay at home. At 4-9-1, the Jackets have lost eight straight, one short of the franchise record. Columbus will look to avoid tying the record tonight when they travel to Washington. The game between the Jackets and Capitals can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pregame at 6:45 and the drop of the puck at 7:00. [more...]

The Cleveland Browns took full advantage of Andy Dalton’s miserable night Thursday, dominating the Cincinnati Bengals 24-3 in an AFC North showdown that was shockingly one-sided from the outset. Cleveland (6-3) improved its best start since 1994 and moved into a first-place tie with Pittsburgh in the NFL’s toughest division. The Browns also ended one of their most enduring streaks of futility. They won a division game on the road for the first time since 2008, ending a streak of 17 consecutive losses. The Browns roughed up Dalton, who was 10 of 33 for 86 yards with three interceptions and two sacks. Cleveland controlled the game by rushing for 170 yards. [more...]

The Ohio Bobcats won for the second time in three games after hammering Buffalo 37-14 last night inside Peden Stadium. Freshman tailback A.J. Ouellette rushed for a season high 154 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns for Ohio, which improved to 5-5 overall on the season and 3-3 in the MAC. Buffalo came into the game averaging 244 yards on the ground versus the ‘Cats in their last three match-ups, but were held to 30 net yards rushing on 25 carries. Ohio’s defense also forced four turnovers and sacked Bulls quarterback Joe Licata three times. With the victory, the Bobcats moved into second place in the MAC East and took another step toward becoming bowl eligible. Ohio will have a bye week next before taking on Northern Illinois Nov. 18th at Peden. [more...]

Four different players scored and the Carolina Hurricanes knocked off the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 last night. It was the third straight win for The Hurricanes, who started 0-6-2 this season. Nick Foligno scored twice for the injury-riddled Blue Jackets, who have lost six in a row. His jam shot with 5:23 left cut the lead to 3-2. Columbus threatened to tie it, but then Carolina pulled away late. The Blue Jackets haven’t lost six in a row in regulation since Nov. of 2006, when Coach Gerard Gallant was fired three days later. Columbus will try and stop the losing streak on Friday when they take on the Hurricanes again in Carolina. [more...]

Madison Bumgarner pitched five innings of near-perfect relief and the San Francisco Giants held off the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Wednesday night in Game 7 of the World Series for their third championship in five seasons. With both starters chased early, it became a matchup of bullpens. And no one stood taller than the 6-foot-5 Bumgarner, who added to his postseason legacy with a third victory this Series. The Giants ended a Series streak that had seen home teams win the last nine Game 7s. San Francisco also earned titles in 2012 and 2010. [more...]

Lorenzo Cain looped a two-run single and Eric Hosmer hit a two-run double in a seven-run second inning as the Kansas City Royals battered the San Francisco Giants 10-0 last night to force a decisive Game 7 in the World Series. Pitching with the initials of late St. Louis outfielder Oscar Taveras on his cap, 23-year-old rookie Yordano Ventura allowed three hits over seven innings for his first Series win. Jeremy Guthrie starts tonight for Kansas City and Tim Hudson for San Francisco in a rematch of Game 3, won by Kansas City 3-2. Lurking is Madison Bumgarner, ready to pitch in relief after stifling the Royals on a total of one run in winning Games 1 and 5. [more...]

Andy Dalton made up for his two second-half turnovers by scoring on a 1-yard sneak with 57 seconds left on Sunday, rallying the Cincinnati Bengals to a 27-24 victory over the Baltimore Ravens that tightened the AFC North race. The Bengals (4-2-1) wasted an 11-point lead as Dalton’s fumble and interception helped the Ravens pull ahead 24-20 with 3:59 left. That’s when Dalton pulled it out against the NFL’s stingiest defense. He threw a 53-yard pass to Mohamed Sanu on third-and-10 and took it the final yard on fourth down, completing a 10-play, 80-yard drive. With the victory the Bengals took over first place in the AFC North division with a 4-2-1 record. [more...]
