Second-year Ohio University baseball coach Rob Smith saw his team chalk up a first in his tenure over the weekend at Bob Wren Stadium. Unfortunately for the Bobcats, it wasn’t the good kind. Central Michigan wiggled out of a jam in the bottom of the ninth Sunday and finished off a weekend sweep with a 4-2 win over Ohio. The Chippewas (13-10, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) became the first conference foe to sweep the Bobcats in Smith’s two years at the helm. [more...]

Javarez Willis hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 59.7 seconds remaining and the Ohio men’s basketball team staged a late-game comeback and extended their season with a 56-54 win over Wright State Saturday in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Willis tied a career-high with 21 points and gave the Bobcats (25-11) enough offensive fire power to advance into the quarterfinals of the CIT. With the victory Ohio reached the 25-win plateau for just the third time in program history. The ‘Cats will look for win No. 26 when they take on VMI Wednesday at 7:00pm inside the Convo. [more...]

The Columbus Blue Jackets ousted the Montreal Canadiens last night, 3-2. Montreal jumped on top with a goal in the first, but exactly one minute later, Columbus responded on a shorthanded goal from Derek MacKenzie. In the second, Brandon Dubinsky netted the only goal to give the Jackets the lead. However, Montreal knotted it up at two with a Thomas Vanek tally early in the third. But Columbus scored with just three minutes left to win the game on a lamplighter from Ryan Johansen. The Jackets will now host the New York Rangers tonight. The Ohio Bobcats advanced to the second round of the CIT last night with a 64-62 win over Cleveland State. The Vikings defense was tough early on, forcing the Bobcats into some mistakes as CSU jumped out to a six-point advantage with eight minutes left in the first half. But the Bobcats came right back behind some treys from Stevie Taylor and took a one-point lead at the intermission. The Bobcats controlled the majority of the second half, led by freshman post player Antonio Campbell’s 21 points. Campbell was fouled with the game tied and four seconds left and hit both from the charity stripe to win the game. The Bobcats advance in the CIT to host IPFW, who bested Akron, on Saturday. The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Carolina Hurricanes last night, 3-1. The Hurricanes jumped on the board just three minutes in and then added to the lead with a pair of goals in the second period. Columbus’ only goal on the night came on a Boone Jenner lamplighter with less than a minute left in the game. The Jackets will now visit the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. In Spring Training action yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds edged the Cleveland Indians, 5-4. The Reds led 3-0 for almost the entire game behind Todd Frazier’s two-run triple and a pair of base knocks from Joey Votto. However, the Indians responded with a Nick Swisher homer and Lonnie Chisenhall triple in the ninth to take a one-run lead. But in the bottom half, the Reds responded behind minor leaguer Steve Selsky’s RBI double to win it. The Reds will now battle Kansas City on Wednesday night at 9. Ohio basketball’s season isn’t over just yet. The Bobcats accepted a bid to play in the CIT or the CollegeInsider tournament. The Bobcats will open the postseason tournament with a home game against in-state rival Cleveland State on Wednesday. Ohio was one of the last teams left out of the NIT. The Bobcats and Vikings do battle at the Convo in the CIT on Wednesday on Power 105. Pre game coverage will start at 6 with the Bobcat Insider and the tip at 7. [more...]

Ohio basketball had their MAC tournament come to an end last night as they fell to Akron in Cleveland, 83-77. The Bobcats led nearly the entire first half and held a five-point advantage going into the intermission. In the second half, both teams came out scorching hot with Ohio’s Nick Kellogg and Bean Willis trading treys with Quincy Diggs and Reggie McAdams of Akron. The Bobcats led by eight with about eight minutes left, but Akron came storming back and dominated the final minutes to pull away. Akron shot 34 free throws to Ohio’s 11, scored 50 points in the second half and shot 62 percent in the second period to get the win. Ohio will now await a possible postseason berth. [more...]

Ohio men’s basketball advanced to the third round of the MAC tournament yesterday with a 63-55 win over the Miami Redhawks. Ohio and Miami were both ice cold in the first half, with Ohio leading by four at the break. In the second half, the two squads went back and forth until Miami led by four with 10 minutes left. However, a pair of Stevie Taylor treys gave the Bobcats the lead right back. Ohio didn’t trail the final five minutes of the game and picked up the tournament win. The Bobcats will now take on Akron tonight in the quarterfinals at the Q. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 5:30 with the Bobcat Insider and the tip at 6:30. [more...]

The Columbus Blue Jackets blew past the Detroit Red Wings last night, 4-1. The Red Wings took the early lead, but the Jackets answered with a Nick Foligno goal late in the first to tie it. After a scoreless second period, Columbus caught fire, scoring twice in the tenth minute on goals from Boone Jenner and Brandon Dubinsky. Then a Derek MacKenzie goal five minutes later sealed the win. The Blue Jackets will now host the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night.
