Todd Frazier hit a two-run homer off Zack Greinke, who lost his perfect record at Great American Ball Park, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 yesterday for a split of their four-game series. The Reds won the last two games to finish a 5-5 homestand that left them stuck closer to the bottom of the NL Central than the top. Alfredo Simon gave up seven singles in eight innings, joining the Cardinals’ Adam Wainwright as the NL’s nine-game winners. Joey Votto finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Skip Shumaker collected two hits as well and scored twice for Cincinnati. [more...]

Johnny Cueto matched his career high with 12 strikeouts in six innings, and Joey Votto and Jay Bruce — the missing core of Cincinnati’s batting order much of the season — each drove in runs Wednesday night, leading the Reds to a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cueto (6-5) followed his shortest start of the season with one of his most dominating. He gave up three singles and didn’t walk a batter, leaving after his 112th pitch. Cueto lasted only five innings during an 8-0 loss to Philadelphia on Friday. Jonathan Broxton escaped a bases-loaded, one-out threat in the seventh by getting Hanley Ramirez to ground into a double play. Votto doubled home a pair of runs off Hyun-Jin Ryu (7-3), who had won his last four starts. [more...]

The Cincinnati Reds lost for the 5th time in their last 7 games after falling to the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-1 last night. Starter Mike Leake lasted just five and a third innings and allowed 9 hits and 5 earned runs while striking out 7. Josh Becket tossed six shutout innings for the Dodgers and allowed just two hits to pick up his fourth win of the year. The two teams will square off again tonight at Great American Ballpark for game 3 of a 4-game set. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

Scott Van Slyke drove in a career-high four runs with two homers off struggling left-hander Tony Cingrani, and the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled away to a 6-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds last night. Van Slyke hit a solo homer and a three-run shot off Cingrani, who could lose his spot in the rotation when Mat Latos returns from the disabled list later this week. Cingrani gave up a career-high six runs, allowed seven hits — matching his career high — and three walks in just 4 2-3 innings. Ryan Ludwick went 2-for-4 at the plate with a homer and 1 RBI; Brandon Philips also collected two hits. With the loss Cincinnati fell to 3-4 on their current 10-game homestand, leaving them fourth in the NL Central. [more...]

Homer Bailey pitched eight effective innings and drove in the go-ahead runs as the Cincinnati Reds came from behind for a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday. Billy Hamilton added a two-run homer for the Reds, who won their second straight against the reeling Phillies after a three-game losing streak. Bailey (7-3) allowed just six hits, one run with three walks and seven strikeouts. He threw a season-high 121 pitches, four short of tying his career high. Aroldis Chapman struck out the side in the ninth for his ninth save. [more...]

The Cincinnati Reds lost a series and got another concern about their pitching staff. Madison Bumgarner got his career-high sixth straight win, and the San Francisco Giants beat the Reds 6-1 on Thursday afternoon, taking a series in Cincinnati for the first time in five years. The Reds won the series opener, pushing their winning streak to a season-high four straight. Then they dropped the last two, scoring a total of three runs. Mike Leake lasted just 5 innings yesterday and allowed 8 hits and 5 earned runs. He wasn’t fully healthy, however, and Manager Bryan Price revealed after the game that Leake has been limited by a stiff neck in his last three starts, interfering with his delivery. [more...]

Michael Morse and Juan Perez homered with two outs in the sixth inning on last night, rallying the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory that ended the Cincinnati Reds’ longest winning streak of the season at four games. San Francisco won for the 10th time in 13 games, improving the best record in the majors to 38-21. Morse hit a solo shot and Perez had a two-run homer off left-hander Tony Cingrani, who has lost all of his four starts since returning from shoulder tendinitis. Billy Hamilton had three singles off Vogelsong, matching his career high. It was his sixth three-hit game of the season. [more...]

Devin Mesoraco hit a two-run homer and Jay Bruce emerged from a slump by driving in a pair of runs on Tuesday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a season-high fourth win in a row with an 8-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Mesoraco hit his ninth homerun off Tim Lincecum, who has beaten the Reds during the playoffs but never during the regular season. Bruce, who spent time on the disabled list following surgery for torn knee cartilage, knocked in his first run since April 25. Homer Bailey went six innings in his first game against the Giants since his no-hitter against them last July at Great American Ball Park. The right-hander gave up three runs, five hits and struck out seven to pick up his 6th win of the year. The Reds will look to make it five in-a-row tonight when they send Tony Cingrani to the mound. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

The last time Homer Bailey faced the Giants, he threw the second no-hitter of his career, silencing San Francisco’s bats on July 2 of last season. Bailey, who has turned in six quality starts in his last eight outings, looks to continue that type of dominance against San Francisco as the Reds open a three-game set with the Giants at Great American Ball Park tonight. Cincinnati has won three in a row and is looking to continue their recent success against San Francisco, having won six of seven against the Giants last season, and eight of 10 games against them dating back to 2012. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pregame set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

Chris Heisey hit a go-ahead homer in the fifth inning and the Cincinnati Reds connected four times in all, beating Arizona 4-3 on Sunday to take three of four from the Diamondbacks. Cincinnati led 3-0 after homers by Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier in the third and by Ryan Ludwick in the fourth. Arizona tied it with a three-run fourth, and then Heisey’s second home run of the season put the Reds on top for good. Alfredo Simon improved to (7-3) and gave up three runs in 6 1-3 innings. Aroldis Chapman hit 103 mph on the Chase Field radar gun in a perfect ninth, earning his seventh save in eight opportunities. Cincinnati is off tonight, but will be looking for its fourth consecutive win tomorrow when they welcome the Giants to Great American Ballpark for a three game set. [more...]
