After 25 years, the Ohio High School state football championships return to Ohio Stadium in Columbus tonight – and one of our area teams will be a part of it. The Athens Bulldogs will be making their first ever appearance in the finals when they take on Toledo Central Catholic in the DIII championship game. The undefeated Bulldogs, led by DIII offensive player of the year Joe Burrow, are coming off their most impressive win in school history when they knocked off defending state champ ASVSM last week in the semi’s. The (12-2) Irish defeated Trotwood Madison last Friday and will be making their 3rd state final appearance. TCU moved up to No. 3 in the College Football Playoff rankings, becoming the latest team to jump past undefeated Florida State. The Seminoles are fourth, still in position to reach the playoff if it can win Saturday’s Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against Georgia Tech. Alabama is No. 1 and Oregon is No. 2 for the third straight week. Ohio State is fifth and Baylor, which beat TCU earlier in the season, is sixth. Boone Jenner’s goal at 10:05 of the third period sent the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 win over the Florida Panthers last night in Nationwide Arena. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for Columbus. Matt Calvert also scored for the Blue Jackets, while goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky had 24 saves for his first win since Nov. 15. Blue Jackets rookie Kerby Rychel, who was recalled from minor-league Springfield on Saturday, assisted on Jenner’s game-winner for his first NHL point. Andy Dalton ran for one touchdown and threw to A.J. Green for another Sunday, helping the Cincinnati Bengals stay atop the AFC North with a sloppy 14-13 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Dalton shrugged off three first-half interceptions to help the Bengals (8-3-1) win on the road for the third consecutive week, a franchise first. Week 14 of the high school football season gets underway this weekend with two area teams just one win away from the making the state championship game at the Horseshoe. The undefeated Athens Bulldogs travel to New Philadelphia tonight to take on back-to-back defending state champion ASVSM. The Bulldogs are coming off their most impressive victory in school history after defeating St. Francis DeSales 52-20 in the regional title game last week. Tonight’s game can be heard live on Power 105 and 970WATH with pregame at 7:15 and the kick off at 7:30. The (13-0) Trimble Tomcats travel to Mt. Vernon High School Saturday night to take on Norwalk St. Paul in a DVII state semi-final. LeBron James scored 29 points, Kevin Love added 21 and the Cleveland Cavaliers exacted a little revenge on Washington with a 113-87 win over the Wizards on Wednesday night. Five days after they were embarrassed in a 91-78 loss to Washington, the Cavs controlled this one from the start and got back to .500. James led the way, also collecting 10 rebounds and eight assists in 36 minutes. The four-time MVP, who called his team “fragile” during a recent four-game losing streak, was energized from the start as he powered to the basket and imposed his will on the Wizards. [more...]

Josiah Yazdani kicked a 29-yard field goal as time expired to lift Ohio to a 24-21 win over Miami in “The Battle of the Bricks” Tuesday night. Jordan Reid hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Derrius Vick with 11:28 left to tie the 91st meeting between the teams at 21-21. Yazdani missed a 42-yard attempt with under two minutes left. Miami then drove to the Ohio 45 yard line, but the drive stalled and the RedHawks sailed the ensuing punt into the end zone for a touch back. After running for a first down at the Miami 33, Vick found Chase Cochran for 18 yards and Brendan Cope for 38 yards for a first down at the Miami 11, where Yazdani booted the game-winner. [more...]

Ohio tailback back A.J. Ouellette was named the Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced yesterday.  Ouellette carried the ball 25 times for 127 yards and scored 1 touchdown in a 21-14 loss to Northern Illinois last week. He also caught four passes for nine yards and a score. The Bobcats return to the gridiron tonight when they travel to Oxford to take on the Miami Red Hawks in the battle of the bricks. Miami is 2-9 overall and have dropped two straight. Ohio is 5-6 and 3-4 in the MAC. Andy Dalton threw for 233 yards and a touchdown and A.J. Green had 121 yards receiving to give the Cincinnati Bengals a 22-13 win over the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Bengals led throughout, but Houston cut the lead to 3 late in the third quarter before Cincinnati tacked on two field goals in the fourth to secure the win. Rookie Jeremy Hill scored on a 2-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter after an interception by Ryan Mallett for Cincinnati’s only touchdown of the second half. With the victory Cincinnati improved to (7-3-1) and remained atop the AFC North Standings. [more...]

The Ohio Bobcats made their first road trip of the season last night, and lost 79-62 to Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla. Ohio trailed 45-20 at the intermission, but stormed back with a 24-9 run in the 2nd half to cut the lead to 13. The Eagles however responded with a run of their own in front of a sellout crowd at Alico Arena, before earning the 16 point victory.  Florida Gulf Coast — complete with its #DunkCity tag — made it to the sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament in 2013 and were the preseason favorites to win the Atlantic Sun Conference this year. Maurice Ndour scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Ohio, which fell to 1-1 on the season. [more...]
