In spring training action yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds topped San Diego, 7-3. The Reds pounded former Cincinnati hurler Edison Volquez behind homers from Shin-Soo Choo, Ryan Ludwick and Joey Votto. Mike Leake was strong on the mound for the Reds, throwing six innings and giving up one run on five hits. He struck out four and walked none. The Reds will now battle Kansas City today at 4. The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to Vancouver last night, 1-0 in a shootout. In a defensive battle, the game was scoreless through three periods and in overtime as Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky was fantastic, saving all 32 shots sent at him. In the shootout, both sides were denied on their first two attempts, but Maxim LaPierre would tally a goal for the Canucks and Matt Calvert’s last chance shot would come up short to give Vancouver the win. Ohio guard DJ Cooper was named to the Lou Henson Mid-Major All-America team yesterday. The squad consists of the Top 25 Mid-Major players in the country. Cooper is a finalist for the 2013 Lou Henson Award, given to the nation’s top Mid-Major player. Cooper averaged 14.1 points per game and was seventh in the nation with 7.1 assists per outing. The Ohio State Buckeyes edged out 10th seeded Iowa State in Dayton yesterday to advance to the Sweet 16, 78-75. Ohio State led by two after the break, but would push the lead out to as many as 13 midway through the second half. However, the Cyclones came roaring back to take the lead with three minutes left. But with seconds remaining on the clock, Aaron Craft stepped back and drained a three to send Ohio State to the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight year. The Buckeyes were led by Deshaun Thomas with 22 points and Craft finished with 18 points and 6 assists. Ohio State will now face off with Arizona on Thursday in Los Angeles. [more...]

In Spring Training action yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds fell to Oakland, 10-9. Reds ace Johnny Cueto struggled, throwing 1 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on five hits with two walks. The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Miami Heat last night, 98-95. The Cavs came out on fire, leading by 21 at the intermission and pushing that lead out to 27 in the third quarter. However, LeBron James and the Heat would come storming back behind a 33-2 run to give Miami the lead. The Cavs had the ball with seconds left down by three, but a CJ Miles trey at the buzzer would fall short and the Heat extended their winning streak to 24. The Heat hit 10 treys in the second half and outscored the Cavs, 52-22 over the final stretch of the ball game. LeBron tallied a triple-double for Miami behind 25 points, 10 assists and 12 rebounds. The Cavs were led by Wayne Ellington with 20 points on the night. Cleveland will now head to Houston on Friday night at 8. [more...]

The Ohio Bobcats season came to a close last night with a tough loss to Denver in the NIT first round, 61-57. The Bobcats and Pioneers went back and forth in the first half, but Ohio would go on a 7-0 run to finish the first half and lead by two at the break. In the second half, the Bobcats pushed their lead out to as many as seven only to have Denver come storming back. Ohio had the ball down by one with seconds remaining, but a DJ Cooper layup was swatted away. With the clock under ten seconds, a last second Reggie Keely layup would fall short and Ohio fell. The Bobcats were led by DJ Cooper with 16 points and Reggie Keely with 12. The Ohio senior class of Reggie Keely, DJ Cooper, Ivo Baltic, Walter Offutt and David McKinley will go out as the winningest in Bobcat history. [more...]

The OHSAA released the All-Ohio teams for Division 2 yesterday. Jordan Kidd of Vinton County was named to the All-Ohio second team while Joey Burrow of Athens was placed on the All-Ohio third team. Athens’ Ibi Watson and L.B. Remy of Vinton County were given All-Ohio honorable mention. [more...]

The Ohio Bobcats fell short of making the NCAA tournament this weekend, but were given a six seed in the NIT. The Bobcats will play at third seeded Denver in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday night. The Pioneers are out of the Western Athletic Conference and are 21-9 on the season. Should Ohio win, the Bobcats would advance to face the winner of Maryland-Niagara later this week. The Bobcats and Pioneers in the NIT can be heard on Power 105 on Tuesday night with pre game at 8:15 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 9:15. [more...]

The Athens Bulldogs fell to the Warren Warriors last night in overtime in the regional semifinals, 74-69. The Bulldogs came out of the gates firing behind Joey Burrow, but Warren would push a lead out to 11 midway through the second quarter. The Bulldogs would close the half on an 8-0 run to trail by three going into the break. In the third quarter it was all Athens, as Joey Burrow and Ibi Watson pushed Athens in front by as many as 13 as the Bulldogs led by 11 going into the fourth. But Evan French would score 21 in the fourth to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the extra period, the Bulldogs turnovers were too much to overcome as Warren took the lead midway through and never let go. The Bulldogs were led by Joey Burrow with 28 points and Ibi Watson with 22. Athens finishes 21-5 on the season. Warren advances to the Elite Eight to take on New Philadelphia on Saturday at 3.
