Devin Mesoraco hit his third grand slam of the season and drove in six runs, and the Cincinnati Reds salvaged the finale of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins with a 7-2 win on Sunday. Brad Hand walked Todd Frazier with the bases loaded in the fifth to break a 2-all tie. Mesoraco followed with his second homer of the game and 20th of the season. Mesoraco leads all major league catchers in home runs and the National League in grand slams. He is 6 for 7 with the bases loaded and is the sixth player in Reds’ history to hit three slams in one season — the first since Chris Sabo in 1993. Latos, making his 10th start since opening the season on the disabled, allowed just one baserunner past second base before Yan Gomes led off Cleveland’s three-run eighth with his 16th homer. Johnny Cueto won his fifth straight decision and the Cincinnati Reds, aided by a bizarre play in which a Cleveland runner was fooled by a second ball on the field, defeated the Indians 9-2 on Tuesday night. The Indians, trying to mount a comeback in the seventh lead to 6-2 and moved David Murphy to third as a ball thrown by reliever Jumbo Diaz rolled behind second base. Murphy mistakenly thought that ball was live and edged off third. He was tagged out after the ball that was in play was thrown to Santiago. Indians manager Terry Francona spoke briefly with the umpires, but the call stood. The Reds will look to make it two in a row tonight as the series switches to Great American Ballpark. Mike Leake pitched into the eighth inning and singled home a run — a rare commodity for the Reds these days — leading Cincinnati to a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night. The Reds won for only the second time in 11 games since the All-Star break. The offense has been the biggest problem, scoring only 20 runs — by far the fewest in the majors over that span. Leake (8-9) had a single off the glove of diving third baseman Martin Prado that drove in a run in the second off Trevor Cahill, who has yet to win as a starter this season. Todd Frazier and Brayan Pena had RBI singles off Cahill, who fell to 0-6 in seven starts this season. Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his 23rd save. He extended his streak of at least one strikeout in 45 consecutive appearances, a major league record for a reliever. [more...]
