Athens quarterback Joe Burrow announced yesterday that he verbally committed to play football for Urban Meyer and The Ohio State Buckeyes in 2015. The 6-foot-4 junior has led the Bulldogs to a 23-and-3 record the last two seasons and back-to-back appearances in the regional finals. He has thrown for 6,971 yards and 94 touchdowns while adding another 1,425 yards rushing and 22 scores. Burrow is commit No. 3 for Ohio State in the class-of-2015. Hyun-Jin Ryu took a perfect game into the eighth inning — one day after teammate Josh Beckett threw a no-hitter — and the Los Angeles Dodgers held on to beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 last night. The Reds hit only three balls out of the infield before Todd Frazier’s leadoff double down the left-field line in the eighth. That followed a three-run seventh by the Dodgers in which Ryu ran the bases and scored. The left-hander from South Korea came close to making the Dodgers the first team in major league history with consecutive no-hitters. Johnny Cueto allowed just 4 hits and 1 earned run in 6 and 1/3 innings for the Reds, who suffered their league leading 13th one-run loss of the season. [more...]

Adam Wainwright became the National League’s first eight-game winner by dominating Cincinnati again, and the St. Louis Cardinals pulled away to a 4-0 victory last night that completed another successful series against their division rival. The Cardinals are 6-3 against the Reds this season. They’ve won 10 of their last 11 series together. Overall, St. Louis has won nine of its last 11 games and moved to within 1 1-2 games of first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central. Wainwright beat Johnny Cueto and the Reds on opening day in Cincinnati, allowing only three hits during seven innings of a 1-0 victory. On Sunday, the right-hander gave up five hits in eight innings and matched his career high with 12 strikeouts. Mike leake took the loss for Cincinnati after pitching 6 innings and giving up 2 earned runs while striking out 8. [more...]

The St. Louis Cardinals are making their second trip to Great American Ball Park tonight, where they took two of three games in the season-opening series. St. Louis is 4-2 against the Reds this season after taking two of three at home back in early April. All told, they’ve won nine of their last 10 series against Cincinnati. Both teams are chasing the first-place Brewers, but with the Cardinals having finished either first or second in the National League Central in each of the last five seasons, the Reds know they’ll have to beat the Cards for a shot at the division crown. Alfredo Simon settled down after a rough start and came back after a 61-minute rain delay to win his sixth game, allowing one run over seven innings Thursday in the Cincinnati Reds’ 2-1 victory over the Washington Nationals. Simon gave up a leadoff homer to Denard Span in the first, worked out of a jam in the second, then allowed only three more baserunners as the Reds finished a road trip by taking two of three from Washington. Simon threw two innings after the storm interrupted the game for just over an hour. Jonathan Broxton handled the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a one-two-three ninth for his third save, hitting 103 mph on the stadium’s radar gun. Brandon Phillips and Brayan Pena each had RBI singles for the Reds, who are off tonight before starting a three game series versus the Cardinals at Great American Ballpark on Friday. [more...]

Denard Span had three hits off the major’s top pitcher and forced a pair of throwing errors Tuesday night to lead the Washington Nationals to a 9-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Span finished 5 for 5 with two runs, two doubles, two RBIs and a stolen base as the Nationals accomplished a first for 2014: They made Johnny Cueto look mortal. The Reds’ ace allowed more than two runs, more than five hits and failed to pitch at least seven innings — all for the first time this season. The final line for Cueto: 5 1-3 innings, six hits, six earned runs and six strikeouts. He also hit two batters in the same inning — the seven-run sixth when the Nationals blew the game open. Todd Frazier’s two-run homer in the 15th inning lifted the Cincinnati Reds over the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Monday night. Brandon Phillips singled off Ross Detwiler to open the inning and with one out, Frazier homered to center. The home run also ended a 27 2-3 innings scoreless streak by the Nationals’ bullpen. Logan Ondrusek worked two innings for the win, allowing an RBI single to Greg Dobbs in the bottom of the 15th before getting Danny Espinosa to fly out to deep right to end the 4-hour, 58-minute game. Frazier went 3-for-6 at the plate with 1 homerun and 2 RBI’s and also scored twice. The Reds and Nationals will meet up again tonight for the second of three meetings. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:35 and the first pitch at 7:05. [more...]

Four different Phillies homered Sunday and Philadelphia beat the Cincinnati Reds to win the three game series at Citizens Bank Park. After winning the opener 3-0 on Friday, the Reds were hammered 12-1 Saturday night before losing the rubber-match 8-3 yesterday.  Back from the disabled list, Reds starter Tony Cingrani pitched six innings and gave up four runs and seven hits – including three homers – and struck out seven. It was Cingrani’s first start since April 30. He had been on the disabled list because of mild shoulder tendinitis. Catcher Devin Mesoraco had a career-high four hits, including two doubles and an RBI. The Reds again played without the injured Joey Votto, who remained in Cincinnati over the weekend with a strained quad. [more...]
