Chase Headley homered in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman, the first hit the hard-throwing lefty allowed since his returning from the disabled list, and the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 last night. The Padres got their season-high fourth straight win despite managing only three hits. Seth Smith had the only two hits that Mike Leake allowed in the first eight innings. Headley connected on a 99 mph fastball from Chapman, who was making his second appearance since undergoing surgery to repair damage after being struck in the left eye and nose during a spring training game. Brandon Phillips went 3-for-4 at the plate and had the lone RBI for the Reds, who suffered their 12th one-run defeat of the season which is the most in the majors. Cincinnati will look to rebound from the loss tonight and will send Johnny Cueto to the mound. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game scheduled for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

If the old adage is true and it’s really not how you start, but how you finish, the Cincinnati Reds may be on to something. They have won 14 of their past 25 games since starting the season 3-8. After taking 2-out-3 from the Rockies over the weekend, the Reds have won nine of their last 11 games at home. Overall, they are 11-8 at Great American Ball Park and have won five of their past eight series. As the Reds have heated up, so has third baseman Todd Frazier. He extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games Sunday and has hit safely in 16 of the last 18. He also leads the team with seven home runs and 21 RBIs. Frazier and the Reds will look to continue their hot streak as they welcome the San Diego Padres to Great American Ball Park tonight. The game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

Aroldis Chapman made his first major league appearance of the season Sunday and struck out the side in the ninth with his 100 mph fastball to close out the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-1 victory over Colorado. Todd Frazier hit his second home run in three days to back Homer Bailey’s shutdown pitching as Cincinnati won the rubber match of its three-game series with the Rockies. Chapman was greeted by a standing ovation from the crowd of 33,143. He reached 100 mph with his first pitch and topped out at 102 in earning the save. Chapman had been out since being hit above the left eye by a line drive during a spring training game on March 19. Skip Schumaker drove in two runs and the Reds capitalized on two Colorado throwing errors to send the Rockies to their third loss in four games. Cincinnati is off tonight, but returns to the diamond on Tuesday to begin a 3-game series with the Padres at Great American Ball Park. [more...]

Months of speculation, preparation, anticipation and misinformation finally came to an end last night with the first round of the 2014 NFL draft. The Houston Texans made defensive end Jadaveon Clowney the first overall pick. Offensive tackle Greg Robinson went second to St. Louis, followed by quarterback Blake Bortles taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Cleveland Browns owned the 4th overall pick but traded it to Buffalo, who took receiver Sammy Watkins. Linebacker Khalil Mack rounded out the top five after being picked by Oakland. The Browns ended up selecting defensive back Justin Gilbert 8th overall – but made the most noise in the draft by trading up to take Quarterback Johnny Manzel with the 22nd pick. The Cincinnati Bengals drafted Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard 24th overall. [more...]

David Ortiz and Mike Napoli also drove in runs for the World Series champion Red Sox. The Cincinnati Reds lost another one-run game last night after falling to the Red Sox 4-3. Grady Sizemore lined one off the Green Monster to score the game-winning run in the 12th inning to give Boston the series opening victory. It was the longest game between the two teams since the Red Sox won Game 6 of the 1975 World Series on Carlton Fisk’s 12th-inning homer. Logan Ondrusek took the loss for Cincinnati, which fell 2 games below .500 this season. Ondrusek pitched a scoreless 11th but gave up singles to David Ortiz and Mike Napoli before Sizemore lined one off the left-field Wall. Todd Frazier, Ryan Ludwick and Skip Shumaker each had an RBI for the Reds, who have lost 10 one-run games this season, the most in Major League Baseball. Boston and Cincinnati will conclude their 2-game series tonight, which can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game at 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

The Cincinnati Reds are hoping to keep building after putting a few wins together. Doing so could prove difficult without their slugging right fielder. After losing Jay Bruce to injury, the Reds open a two-game road set against the Boston Red Sox tonight at Fenway Park. While Bruce was scratched from Sunday’s lineup with what was believed to be a sore left knee, further tests revealed a partially torn meniscus. The two-time All-Star, hitting .216 with three homers, had surgery Monday and is expected to miss up to a month. With Bruce on the sidelines, Chris Heisey could see more playing time. He drew a two-out walk and scored from first on Todd Frazier’s double as the Reds beat Milwaukee 4-3 in 10 innings Sunday. The Reds are 15-16 overall, 1 game below .500, but have won four of six after getting swept at Atlanta. [more...]

Chris Heisey scored from first base on Todd Frazier’s double into the left-field corner and the Cincinnati Reds came from behind for a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in 10 innings on Sunday. Heisey drew a two-out, four-pitch walk from Tyler Thornburgh, and Frazier followed with a line drive that one-hopped the wall. Heisey beat shortstop Jean Segura’s off-target relay to the plate to give the Reds three wins in their four-game series against the first place Brewers. Brandon Phillips, who greeted reliever Brandon Kintzler with a game-tying 425-foot blast to center in the eighth inning, finished 2-for-4 and also scored twice. Frazier collected 2 RBI’s and Brayan Pena also went deep for Cincinnati, which is now 5 ½ games back of Milwaukee. The Reds are off tonight, but will return to the diamond on Tuesday as they start a two-game series with the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox. [more...]
