The Cincinnati Reds second half will begin with injuries, a big storyline of their first half, still looming large. But even though not at full strength, a strong stretch over the last month and seven wins in the team’s final nine games before the break has Cincinnati just 1 1/2 games back in the National League Central. The Reds will travel to the Bronx tonight to face Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees after a four-day hiatus. Cincinnati will be without two major parts of their lineup. Brandon Phillips will miss more than a month with a torn ligament in his left thumb, and Joey Votto is on the disabled list for the second time this season with a nagging right thigh injury. Tonight’s game versus the Yankees can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pre game scheduled for 6:35 and the first pitch at 7:05. [more...]

The Southern Ohio Copperheads won 9-4 over the Lake Erie Monarchs last night. Caleb Swartz pitched five innings and allowed 3 earned runs to pick up his second win of the year. Ohio University’s Tyler Finkler hit two triples, a double, drove in three runs and scored twice. The victory was the Copperheads fifth win in a row and pushed their record to 15-14 overall on the season. Matt Mikolajczak tossed six strong innings, and the Snakes posted a 4-2 win at Lake Erie on Monday night. Mikolajczak, who pitches for Ohio University in the spring, continued his strong season. He improved to 4-0 on the year after giving up six hits and two runs while striking out nine. Southern Ohio will be back in action Thursday night at Bob Wren Stadium against the Licking County Settlers at 7:30. [more...]

The 2014 MLB All-Star game takes place tonight at 8 o’clock on FOX. The winner of tonight’s game in Minneapolis between the American League and National League will get home field advantage in the World Series this October. The Cincinnati Reds said on Sunday that right-handed pitcher Alfredo Simon had been added to the National League team. Simon, who was the first NL pitcher to reach 12 wins, is tied with St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright for the league lead. Simon joins fellow Reds right-hander Johnny Cueto, left-hander Aroldis Chapman, third baseman Todd Frazier and catcher Devin Mesoraco on the NL team. The previous time the Reds had as many as five All-Stars was in 1991 — pitchers Tom Browning and Rob Dibble, shortstop Barry Larkin, right fielder Paul O’Neill and third baseman Chris Sabo. Kris Negron hit his first career home run, and All-Star Todd Frazier added a two-run shot as the Cincinnati Reds rolled into the break with a 6-3 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Negron, who was called up from Triple-A Louisville on Thursday, celebrated his first major league start with a three-run, opposite-field homer to right off of Francisco Liriano in the second inning. The RBIs were also the first of his career, and the hit was his second. Starter Johnny Cueto went 6 innings allowed 3 earned runs and struck out 7 to pick up his 10th win of the season. The Reds went 8-3 on their 11-game home stand before the All-Star break against Central Division-opponents Milwaukee, the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh. [more...]

Luis Valbuena hit a tiebreaking, two-run triple in the 12th inning and the Chicago Cubs avoided a rare five-game sweep in Cincinnati with a 6-4 win Thursday. Highly regarded prospect Arismendy Alcantara singled with one out and went to second on Starlin Castro’s two-out infield single. Valbuena then sent a ball to deep right field off J.J. Hoover that Skip Schumaker couldn’t catch up with. Ryan Ludwick went 3-for-6 at the plate with one homerun and two RBI’s for the Reds. Cincinnati will look to get back on track tonight as it welcomes division rival Pittsburg to Great American Ballpark to begin a 3-game set. Tonight’s game can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with pregame set for 6:40 and the first pitch at 7:10. [more...]

Alfredo Simon became the NL’s first 12-game winner and Billy Hamilton added to his sensational series with a tiebreaking triple Wednesday night, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. The Reds won their fifth in a row — matching their season high — and moved a season-best seven games over .500. Simon, who was left off the All-Star team, became the first Reds pitcher to win a dozen games before the break since Edinson Volquez in 2008. The reliever-turner-starter gave up just four hits in 6 2-3 innings. [more...]

He was back in the outfield and homered again in the first inning off left-hander Travis Wood. [more...]

Jay Bruce played first base for the first time since high school and committed an error that let in a run Monday night, but later homered to help the Cincinnati Reds rally for a 9-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a five-game series. Billy Hamilton drove in a career-high four runs with a single and a bases-loaded triple. The Reds have won 11 of their last 16 games despite getting little production from injured first baseman Joey Votto. Mike Leake gave up a two-run homer by Anthony Rizzo and an unearned run off Bruce’s error during seven innings. He improved to 8-2 in his career against Chicago, including 4-0 in his last four starts with a 1.71 ERA. The Reds and Cubs will square off twice in a day-night doubleheader today. Both games can be heard live on 970WATH and 97.1FM with the first one at 1:10 and the night game at 7:10. [more...]

Jay Bruce emerged from the deepest slump of his career with a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning on Sunday, rallying the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Reds gained a game on the NL Central leaders by taking two of three in their series, moving to six back, and have won 10 of 15 overall. The Brewers have lost five of six but still have the NL’s best record and a comfortable lead. Bruce hit a two-run shot with one out in the eighth off left-hander Will Smith, who took over for starter Yovani Gallardo. Mat Latos allowed two runs and four hits in a season-high eight innings. Jonathan Broxton pitched the ninth for his sixth save in eight chances.
